A café-au-lait macule is a common birthmark presenting as a hyperpigmented skin patch with a sharp border. Café-au-lait macules are usually present at birth (congenital) or appear in early infancy. They sometimes become apparent later in infancy, especially after exposure to the sun, which darkens the colour.
What causes café-au-lait macules?
The brown colour of a café-au-lait macule is due to a pigment called melanin, which is produced in the skin by cells called melanocytes.
How does Café au lait birthmark reduction work?
Treatment involves using a specific light wave that is right for the specific colour and make-up of the birthmark. Over a course of treatments, the laser breaks down the pigment so that the mark fades and blends in with the surrounding skin, without leaving any scars.
Please be aware that in our clinic only I am only able to treat birthmarks on those who have the very palest of skin, (i.e Fitzpatrick skin types 1 & 2). For those who have darker skin tones (i.e 3, 4. 5 & 6) I recommend you consult a dermatologist.

How long does it take?
A typical treatment session is approximately 30 minutes. The total number of treatments required will vary depending upon the individual birthmark. Most clients need around 3 treatments, it is important to realise that café-au-lait pigmented birthmarks are likely to re-occur if they are exposed to direct sunlight.
How does birthmark removal treatment feel?
Treatment can be mildly uncomfortable, but no anaesthesia is required, and most people describe the discomfort as moderate and acceptable. We use our specialist Cryocooler during and straight after treatment to help calm the skin.
Are there any side effects?
Redness and slight swelling are normal after treatment, but this usually subsides quickly. Very rarely a small blister may form, however, most people experience no side effects and any skin reaction usually disappears within a few hours.
