Birthmarks are simply a discolouration of the skin and can have a variety of causes including an unusual grouping of blood vessels or a localised excess of the pigment that gives skin its colour.
How does laser birthmark removal treatment work?
Treatment involves using a specific light wave that is right for the specific colour and make-up of the birthmark. Over a course of treatments, the laser breaks down the colour so that the mark fades and blends in with the surrounding skin, without leaving any scars.
How long does it take?
A typical treatment session is approximately 30 minutes. The total number of treatments required will vary depending upon the type of birthmark. Some will need from six to twelve sessions and it is important to realise that some birthmarks can re-occur.
How does birthmark removal treatment feel?
Treatment can be mildly uncomfortable, but no anaesthesia is required, and most people describe the discomfort as moderate and acceptable. We use our specialist cryo cooler during and straight after treatment to help calm the skin.
Are there any side effects?
Redness and slight swelling are normal after treatment, but this usually subsides quickly. Very rarely a small blister may form, however, most people experience no side effects and any skin reaction usually disappears within a few hours.
