Wart & Verruca Removal in Stansted Mountfitchet

Effective Wart and Verruca Treatment, Honest Advice

Warts and verrucas are very common, but they can be stubborn, uncomfortable and embarrassing. I treat warts and verrucas at my private clinic in Stansted Mountfitchet, just a few minutes from Bishop’s Stortford and Stansted Airport. I’ll be honest with you from the start: warts usually need more than one treatment, and I explain exactly why below.

What Are Warts and Verrucas?

Warts are small, rough growths on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear almost anywhere, most often on the hands, fingers, knees and face. Verrucas are warts on the soles of the feet. Because you walk on them, they get pushed into the skin, which can make them flatter, harder and quite painful. Warts and verrucas are harmless, but they are contagious and can spread to other areas of your body or to other people.

How I Treat Warts and Verrucas

My preferred treatment for adults is electrocautery. I use a fine probe with a mild electrical current to treat the wart precisely. In my experience, it’s usually the most effective option, and most people need fewer treatments with it than with freezing. It can feel a little more uncomfortable, which is why I recommend numbing cream beforehand.

CryoPen: An Alternative When Electrocautery Isn’t Suitable

If electrocautery isn’t suitable for you, for example if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electrical device, I use CryoPen instead. CryoPen freezes the wart with a precise jet of nitrous oxide. It’s quick, gentle and needle free, although it may take a few more sessions. The price is exactly the same whichever method I use.

Why Do Warts Need More Than One Treatment?

This is the question I’m asked most, so I want you to know what to expect before you book. Warts are caused by a virus that lives in the skin. Treatment removes the wart you can see, but the virus can still be present in the skin around it. Each treatment also helps prompt your immune system to recognise the virus and fight it off.

Everyone’s immune system is different, so some warts clear after one or two treatments, while others take several. Verrucas, and warts that have been there for a long time, are often deeper and more stubborn. I’ll always be honest about what to expect for your wart, and I’ll advise you on the best timing between treatments.

Does Wart Removal Hurt?

Most people find it very manageable. For electrocautery, I recommend buying EMLA numbing cream from your local pharmacy and applying it generously about one and a half hours before your appointment, covering it with cling film and topping it up as it sinks in. Without numbing cream you may feel some discomfort, which most of my clients find easy to tolerate. CryoPen feels like a brief cold sting.

Wart and Verruca Removal for Children

I treat children aged 10 and above with parental consent. For children I only use CryoPen, as it’s quick and gentle with no needles. A parent or guardian will need to stay with them throughout the appointment.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Before you even come to the clinic, I’ll ask you to complete a medical history form. This means I already know which treatment suits you before you arrive, so I never waste your time. At your appointment, I’ll take a look at your wart or verruca and talk you through the plan. Once we’re both happy, I’ll treat it there and then, and go through your aftercare before you leave.

Aftercare and Healing

After electrocautery, a small scab forms over the treated area. Keep it clean and dry, and let the scab fall off naturally, which usually takes around 7 to 10 days. After CryoPen, the area may darken slightly, then dry and fall away within one to three weeks. I give every client verbal and written aftercare.

Wart and Verruca Removal Prices

I don’t charge per wart. Instead, you pay for treatment time, and the price is the same whether I use electrocautery or CryoPen.

Package 1: £180 for 14 minutes of treatment time
Package 2: £280 for 30 minutes of treatment time

For warts and verrucas, 14 minutes is almost always plenty of time, so most people only ever need Package 1 for each session. As most warts need more than one treatment, you’ll book a new session each time.

Wart and Verruca Removal FAQs

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is different, as it depends on how your immune system responds. Some warts clear in one or two sessions, but many need several. I’ll give you an honest idea at your appointment.

Are warts and verrucas contagious?

Yes. To help stop them spreading, avoid picking or scratching them, don’t share towels, and wear flip flops in communal showers and changing rooms.

Can I go swimming?

Wait until the treated area has healed. Once it has, cover any verruca with a waterproof plaster when swimming to help protect others.

Do you treat children?

Yes, I treat children aged 10 and above with parental consent, using CryoPen only.

Which areas can you treat?

I treat warts on all areas of the body, including hands, fingers, feet, knees and the face.

I’ve tried treatments from the chemist. Can you still help?

Yes. Many of my clients come to me after shop bought treatments haven’t worked. Please don’t try to cut or burn a wart off at home, as this can cause infection and scarring.

Do you also remove skin tags and moles?

Yes. I also offer skin tag removal and mole removal, so you can have everything looked at in one visit.
